Approved tracking devices

Selected customer-owned tracking devices can be attached to shipments that require continuous monitoring throughout the journey. Read more about devices approved for Finnair flights.

Shipments Containing Electronic Monitoring Devices (EMD)

On Finnair flights, you can use your own tracking device from approved manufacturers to monitor your shipment. To support your end-to-end tracking of your temperature sensitive cargo we have pre-approved the following tracking devices, which you might place on your cargo shipment.

If you are interested in approvals for tracking devices other than listed here, please contact fill out this document and return it with accompanying documents to Finnair Manager, Cargo Compliance and Processes (olli.huuhka@finnair.com).

Electronic Monitoring Devices (EMD) mean devices capable of transmitting data (signals) by using radio-frequency electromagnetic fields, usually with a purpose to monitor the condition of cargo such as temperature sensitive pharmaceuticals or valuable cargo.

Please kindly take note of the following instructions concerning monitoring devices.

EMD requirements

Following conditions must be met before these devices can be carried on board aircraft operated by Finnair:

a) Devices must have features that prevent them from transmitting signals during air transport in a way that could disturb or effect the operation of any aircraft instruments, e.g. a feature that maintains the device in OFF mode throughout the period it is on board an aircraft.

b) Lithium Ion batteries used in these devices must meet the requirements of current IATA DGR Packing Instruction 967 Section II and each package must not contain more than four cells or more than two batteries installed in the device.

c) Lithium Metal batteries used in these devices must meet the requirements of current IATA DGR Packing Instruction 970 Section II and each package must not contain more than four cells or more than two batteries installed in the device.

d) Devices must meet requirements of aviation regulations:

  • EASA-OPS CAT.GEN.MPA 140 and EASA Decision 2014/029/R. For further info please see: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/
  • US 14 CFR 91.21, 121.306, 125.204,135.144.

Transport Requirements

  • Air waybill of shipments containing applicable devices must show the following statement: "Contains Electronic Monitoring Devices".
  • Special handling code (SHC) EMD must be used in all operational phases, starting from booking.
  • Data loggers and cargo tracking devices with installed lithium batteries, attached to or placed in packages, overpacks or unit load devices are not subject to any provisions of DGR Regulations provided the following conditions are met:
    • the data loggers/cargo tracking devices must be in use or intended for use during transport;
    • each cell or battery must meet the provisions of DGR 3.9.2.6(a), (e), (f) (if applicable) and (g);
    • for a lithium ion cell or battery, a Watt-hour rating not exceeding 20 Wh;
    • for a lithium metal cell, a lithium content not exceeding 1 g;
    • for a lithium metal battery, an aggregate lithium content not exceeding 1 g;
    • the number of data loggers/cargo tracking devices in or on any package or overpack must be no more than the number required to track or to collect data for the specific consignment;
    • the data loggers/cargo tracking devices must be capable of withstanding the shocks and loadings normally encountered during transport;
    • the devices must not be capable of generating a dangerous evolution of heat;
    • the devices must meet defined standards for electromagnetic radiation to ensure that the operation of the device does not interfere with aircraft systems.

      Note: This exception does not apply where the data loggers or cargo tracking devices are offered for transport as a consignment in accordance with Packing Instruction 967, 970, 977, or 978.
