Swissport appointed new terminal operator at the COOL Nordic Cargo Hub in Helsinki

Helsinki, 17th May, 2019 ― Finnair Cargo has appointed Swissport the new terminal operator at the COOL Nordic Cargo Hub at Helsinki Airport. The global ground and air cargo services company takes over the running of COOL terminal from the previous operator from 1st June 2019.

Finnair Cargo Managing Director, Janne Tarvainen, says Swissport offers the most competitive overall package to further develop Finnair’s cargo operations:

“Swissport is one of the world’s biggest air cargo handling companies and they are our cargo handling partner at numerous airports around the world. We are confident that with their solid industry knowledge and drive for innovation and operational excellence they are an ideal partner for us to develop and expand our COOL concept of data-driven and proactive operations steering in the Finnair network.”

Finnair’s state-of-the-art COOL Nordic Cargo Hub has been in full operation for over a year now, and with operations in the terminal now fully stabilised Finnair Cargo aims to shift focus to network-wide data-driven operational excellence.

Tomi Viitanen, CEO of Swissport Finland Oy is delighted with the new partnership and looks forward to strengthening the collaboration between the companies:

“This new agreement strengthens our long-standing relationship with Finnair and we are excited to contribute to their transformation journey as the operator of their main hub. We share their vision of high-quality service and look forward to exploring the opportunities that digitalisation can bring to air cargo handling.”

The COOL Nordic Cargo Hub

Finnair Cargo’s new terminal at Helsinki Airport is named the COOL Nordic Cargo Hub because of its advanced temperature-control technology and modern sophistication. The 80M-euro cargo terminal was opened for full operations at the start of 2018 and ever since has been handling record volumes as demand for Finnair Cargo has continued to rise.

COOL is the best example in Europe of how robotics and intelligent warehouse automation can target and improve efficiency in air freight. The COOL hub provides the levels of automation required to meet the demands of a paperless, more efficient digital future and is designed for the expansion of the A350 fleet that will double long-haul cargo capacity by 2020.
