Finnair partners announced for biofuel and CO2 offset service starting early 2019

Today we announce the first partners for Finnair's new biofuel and CO2 offset service that will be available to cargo customers and travellers starting early 2019.

Finnair Cargo customers have shown increasing interest in offsetting the CO2 emissions of their air cargo shipments in recent years; a positive trend that has also been recorded among passengers.

Last summer we announced that from early 2019 a new service will be launched by Finnair offering customers the opportunity to offset CO2 emmissions (of their travel or cargo shipments) by funding emissions reduction projects or carbon sinks, or by supporting the use of biofuels.

We are pleased to confirm that we have selected our first partners for this offset service and we will make CO2 offsetting available to customers in early 2019 via Finnair’s website, as envisaged.

Milla Nyholm, Manager of Marketing and Sustainability at Finnair Cargo says she's delighted that Finnair is one big step closer to realising this service:

"I've been positively surprised by the number of shippers and forwarders enquiring about the possibility to offset emissions and I'm excited about this new online self-service because it will make the process of calculating your emissions and offsetting very straightforward for all our customers."

For sustainable biofuels, Finnair will partner with the Dutch company, SkyNRG. And for emission reduction projects, we will work with the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation NEFCO, an international financial institution established by Nordic Governments to finance sustainable green growth and climate projects.

SkyNRG is the market leader globally for sustainable aviation fuel, and its biofuel – made from used cooking oil – is sourced at World Energy’s Paramount refinery in Los Angeles, California.

Finnair is part of an initiative along with Shell, SkyNRG, World Energy, San Francisco Airport and several other air carriers that aims to lay the foundations for a more long-term and reliable supply chain for sustainable aviation fuels. This will help to support the industry’s common targets for CO2 emission reduction.

The flights flown by Finnair with biofuel will be determined by demand for the new service from Finnair customers. Biofuel has a reduction potential of 60-80%, compared to conventional jet fuel, but its price is currently 3X-5X that of conventional jet fuel.

Finnair and Finnair Cargo customers can look forward to being able to offset the CO2 emissions of their flights by funding an emissions reduction programme selected by NEFCO in Mozambique, where efficient cookstoves are taken into use to reduce deforestation and emissions.

Finnair is committed to the aviation industry’s common goals, which are to achieve carbon neutral growth by 2020, and to halve the CO2 emissions by 2050, compared to the 2005 level. On top of this, Finnair has set its own targets for CO2 emission reduction.

Finnair reduces CO2 emissions of its own operations by using modern aircraft, by flying the shortest possible routes, by optimising flight speed and altitude, and by reducing the weight taken on aircraft.

Finnair is also a part of the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme. The aviation industry is also committed to a global emission offsetting scheme (CORSIA, Carbon offsetting and reduction scheme for international aviation), which will become effective from 2019.

In January 2019 we will make additional information available to Finnair Cargo customers explaining more about the initiative and the practicalities.
